Trust
Prompt: What does trust mean to you? Think about how it relates to AI and your role as a design and business leader.
Trust to me is key.
Throughout my life, my education and my career, I have worked at some great companies/projects that have valued the meaning of trust.
Trust to me is: Building relationships through a transparent, authentic and reciprocal relationship. Trust for me is different depending on the type of relationship I am showing up in. My romantic, professional, and personal relationships all have different levels of trust. For example, my family utilizes an app called Life360 that tracks where we are. At first, I was a little fearful of the app but I do appreciate it because "bad" things have happened to me personally and it brings me comfort to know because we all live in different cities, if we need each other we know where each other are. Another way I build trust is being transparent, if people are open to it, I try to help based on my background and ways I have overcome some challenging situations.
My first "real" schooling was my Associates from The Fashion Institue of Design and Merchandising in Visual Communication. This launched me into working for Nordstrom for several years and later Betsey Johnson doing styling and window displays. Throughout this journey I was always building trust with my customers. I was inspired to go to FIDM because making and seeing people feel good, confident and to put trust into me, that "I have their back" and will guarantee them, that in fact that was my main mission.
I then went on to get my BS. I graduated from ArtCenter College of Design and have a background in Interaction and Environmental Design with a concentration in Social Impact Design. I have always been interested in designing experiences that connect people to both the digital and physical world by leveraging my Interaction Design skills, Social, and Spatial background. This is something I am deeply passionate about and do not take on that responsibility as a designer lightly.
While at ArtCenter I developed my skills through the Social Impact program (DesignMatters). I achieved this development through performing sustainability-focused field research in Costa Rica. I also did work at a pediatric burn clinic at COANIQUEM in Santiago, Chile. This project for me, was so valuable, meaningful and allowed me the opportunity to grow my empathy skills, learn and watch people smile because of the work we were doing.

When I went on to pursue my career I worked at frog design, which is a consultancy where I had the opportunity to work on several projects ranging from start-ups and working with Fortune 500 companies. One project I am specifically proud of was the opportunity to travel to DC and surrounding areas to interview Veterans in their home so we could better understand how to design a self scheduling tool, where they no longer would need to call the VA to make an appointment because this created a lot of confusion but were able to schedule online and go see Community Care doctors if they lived outside a certain radius of a VA hospital. This for me is TRUST.

From there I went in-house and worked at athenahealth specifically focused on patient self scheduling. doing design to development projects to better help patients find the care they need and appointments that best work for them.
I can not tell you how much life experiences and professional experiences has built my identity and my ability to design meaningful solutions that build trust with whoever I am interacting with. Trust is a valuable tool and again for me should not be taken lightly. So whether we are designing desktop, mobile, Ipad, you name it solutions I always try to keep "building trust" in mind. Now with all the different AI capabilities we as designer, again I believe need to bring trust to the table in all conversations we are having. I believe if you cannot or unable to bring trust, then we as designers, humans, and people need to take a step back and go back to the drawing board to understand WHY.
Lastly trust is super important to me and being my authentic self and bringing that to the table when appropriate is key to developing meaningful relationship that last. The genuine self is the true self. Being accountable, loving, caring, kind, pushing myself outside of my comfort zone, acknowledging and working through both positive and negative things, etc. can unlock new insights, lessons learned, gratitude and reflection.
A few videos I watched and articles to support my personal journey as a daughter, friend, partner, colleague, student, leader, learner, and a community member. As well as talking with folks about the topic of trust to better understand different perspectives.
